shrinky-dinks

So, we had a shrinky-dink day a few weeks ago, and these are the things I made. I took photos of them before I baked them, next to the sharpie, for contrast with their size after baking.

To the left is a picture of my notebook, with the designs I drew. The hearts and sun/moon have already been baked.

Prebaking pictures:
"teardrop" earrings
large butterfly
small butterfly
bracelet piece

So, the picture on the left is a collection of all the shrinky-dinks, before being baked, and the picture on the right is how they look after, with the sharpie in both pictures for comparison.

Greg Martin has two (now) famous tutorials posted for you photoshop aficionados... one for planets, and one for stars. I reccomend giving them both a shot, although it's kind of formulaic, you still might learn something...just careful- like most photoshop effects, people can spot his 'style' from miles away...it kind of sticks out at you, you know?...stick as in a stick in the mud

Movie Night: Howl's Moving Castle

Such an awesome film. So we're having a movie night tomorrow, Saturday, Sept 30, at 7:00pm. This is the most amazing animation I've seen, with state of the art visuals, sound, and voice acting. Here's the movie trailer if you're interested.

CU had an energy awareness day and it was pretty cool. Maybe even media arts worth :)

**************** Making a bowl *******************************
This is an old record made into a bowl, is this cool or what?! I talked to my roommate and she said all you do is put a bowl under a record and put it in the microwave. The record melts around the bowl. Probably one could melt the record in the oven, you'd just have to watch it. I know I used to make key chain by melting skittle bags

******************Making Paper******************************

Wanna make some paper? Put water and paper in a blender (white or pastel colored paper otherwise the dyes mess it up-- this is why we want to stay away from bold colors, we can't recycle them)

Throw the stuff in a tube.
Then you put something like the above (wood frame with wire net attached and a free standing wood frame on top and aligned) in the water. The water and paper pulp will overflow the top rectangle frame. When you have some paper (maybe a centimeter not pushed down--?? I'm new at this...) lift up and make sure the pulp is evenly spread. At this point you'll take off the top wood frame and paper pulp will be lying on the wire net. Take another piece of wire net (without wood frame) and press it on top of the other draining more water. Then flip it and take off the wire net (attached to the wood frame). Flip the wire net so the paper is down on a flat surface. Sponge off excess water. Take off wire and leave for about an hour and a half.

Bill Roper Interview - Diablo, Warcraft Producer

I really enjoyed watching this. Gives some nice tips on gamemaking and some insights on large-scale distribution. Plus, game producer, so he's just cool and all enthusiastic. He gets to work with lots of creative people and help guide them towards making mindblowing games.

I love fluid dynamics; it just looks so cool. The pong game is hard, I've only made it to level 17, but check out the sandbox mode and make lots of pretty swirls.

This is Vorn, a character I made up who was going to do some guided meditation exercises. I got 1 30 second piece done, with voice and lip syncing, but then moved on to other projects. I really enjoyed the character, and he's got lots of mouths and expressions in his library, but he gets confused for yoda! I do love George Lucas, so yeah, there's a definite influence. We'll see if I bring back Vorn sometime, cause he's a cutie.
